"The Boxing Hares" 36" x 24" Oil on canvas. Owned by
Mrs Carol Rivers.
The lady that commissioned me to do the above painting wanted it in a Naive art style.
It took me just over a week to complete the painting.
I started by covering the canvas with a very diluted wash of oil and white spirit, then I wiped out the shapes of the hares with white spirit on cloth. After going indoors to have a cuppa and recover from the fumes I carried on. Getting all the shapes in was next. Trees etc I roughed in with Ultramarine Blue, Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Red and Burnt Umber. I use Burnt Umber to make my dark colours and in this case to outline.
I finished the painting off quite loosely with thick paint then added an outline around the Hares to make them pop. Ahhh finished. I feel pleased with the result and my customer was overjoyed...on to the next painting.
As I use Windsor and Newton Griffin Alkyd Oil, they are totally dry in Twelve hours. Don't forget to use Alkyd White to do your mixing as if you use an ordinary white it will take forever to dry.
I only ever had five colours on my pallet when I painted the above. As colours are a very personal thing there is no wrong colours to use, as that process comes from deep within.
Hope these ramblings are of some help to you.
Love Chris X
